“Men think you become brain-dead when you’re pregnant,” says actress-singer Donna Lowre, the current co-chair and next year’s chair of Women in Film’s Mothers in Film committee. “Or they feel you can’t give as much or aren’t reliable.”
The support and informational group helps working mothers in the entertainment industry balance careers and parenting. Discussion groups — often with such guest speakers as producers Marcy Carsey and Barbara Boyle — offer advice on schools, day-care, child-rearing techniques and TV violence.
“It’s not the same as a 9 to 5 job — although those mothers work hard too,” says Lowre, who has appeared in “Columbo,””Sisters,””Knots Landing” and “Who’s the Boss.””Our schedules are often erratic and last minute. We often have to work long hours or go on location.”

Lowre, who is in her 30s, has been actively involved in WIF since joining six years ago, serving on committees for the Crystal Awards, film festivals, performers’ workshops and advocacy groups. She joined Mothers in Film when she became pregnant with her daughter, Amanda, now 22 months.
Of her initial reason to join, Lowre says, “I had just moved from New York and didn’t know anyone in Los Angeles. This was a way to meet intelligent, talented and inspirational women. It’s been an extremely positive experience.”
